These greenhouses are commonly used for vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and leafy greens, as well as for strawberries, flowers, and nursery plants. The protected environment reduces the impact of wind, heavy rain, hail, and strong sunlight, resulting in more uniform growth and higher marketable yield. Crops can be planted earlier in spring and harvested later into autumn, and in some climates, continuous year‑round production is possible.

Plastic film greenhouses also support efficient water and nutrient management. Drip irrigation and fertigation systems are easily installed inside the structures, delivering water and fertilizers directly to the root zone. This reduces water waste, minimizes nutrient leaching, and can lower overall input costs. Because the soil is sheltered from heavy rainfall, problems such as erosion and nutrient runoff are less severe than in open‑field cultivation.

Pest and disease pressure can be reduced by using insect‑proof nets, physical barriers, and proper sanitation measures. While greenhouses are not completely pest‑free, the controlled access points make it easier to implement integrated pest management strategies and reduce reliance on broad‑spectrum chemical pesticides. This can help producers meet stricter safety standards and consumer demand for cleaner produce.

From an economic perspective, plastic film greenhouses require a relatively low initial investment compared with glass structures, and they can be erected quickly on a variety of sites. The plastic film typically needs replacement every three to five years, depending on its thickness, UV stabilization, and local climate conditions. Although this adds to maintenance costs, the flexibility, rapid installation, and productivity gains often offset the expense.
